Phase 2 is here and we are open for dining-in again! While we are all excited to leave our houses and dine-out, do take note that there are still measures we have to put in place to ensure your health and safety when dining in our Bistro.

1. Kindly queue at the demarcated stones and wait to be seated. Do also use the time to check-in through the SafeEntry QR Codes. Our staff will take your temperature and seat you together as a whole group.

2. We advice you to make reservations if you wish to dine in our Bistro to reduce waiting and queuing times. Call us at 68989111 to make a reservation.

3. We prefer cashless payment! Most cashless payment methods are accepted.

4. Our TLF Grocer is still open for business! Kindly note that the room can only accept a maximum of 5 people at any one time.

5. Takeaway and delivery options are still available during this period. For takeaways, kindly make your order with us at the front counter, before proceeding to the dedicated takeaway waiting area to wait for your food. Attaining our "30 by 30" vision requires planning and solutions in all aspects. To increase our production yield, we might have to rely on technology and innovation to come up with new infrastructure or farming techniques to increase our yield. We might have to rely on proper land use planning for a more effective and efficient use of our limited land. To encourage our farmers to farm more, we need to increase demand for local produce by supporting and buying local produces. ⠀

"30 by 30" is not a target achieveable by just one stakeholder. If any one solution fails, reaching the goal might be impossible. All of us need to work together, to make available the resources needed to increase production, and to support and make these investments worthwhile. ⠀

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how vulnerable Sin

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how vulnerable Singapore can be in terms of its food security. Despite coming in first in the 2019 Global Food Security Index (https://tinyurl.com/ycwwfc2n), when global crisis hits and countries turn to self-preservation, Singapore's food supply, without strong local production, may be badly affected. However, pandemics aren't the only threat to Singapore's food supply.⠀
⠀
Pre-COVID, global food production was already struggling with the effects of climate change. If we continue our ways before the crisis struck, global food supply will be hit once again. With dwindling supply, countries may once again turn to self-preservation, putting Singapore's food security at risk again. ⠀
⠀
This World Environment Day, let us take a step back and see how we can each do our part to prevent this from happening. Supporting local is one way to go about it. By doing so, you are giving greater support to our local farmers and produce, encouraging them to produce more, thus increasing the percentage of local produce in Singapore's overall food supply. By supporting local, you are also being more environmentally friendly. Local produce will take a shorter and simpler delivery route, reducing whatever is needed to bring the food to you. Carbon footprint, fuel, resources, everything!⠀

Kang Kong is rich in iron, calcium and magnesium, and contains a lot of fiber which can aid digestion. It is also able to help reduce cholstrol levels. So how do you cook them? It is usually cooked with Sambal/Belachan Chilli or Garlic. When cooking, be sure to separate the stems and the leaves and cook the stems first as the leaves will cook much faster.⠀

It is extremely rich in Vitamins A, B and C, and contains one of the highest level of proteins in all vegetables. This makes it extremely healthy and nutritious and great for kids. It also contains a lot of fiber, hence aiding digestion. Sharp Spinach is usually cooked in soups, and Round Spinach is usually cooked in Asian dishes, such as stir-fried with garlic and ikan bilis. Quail eggs are just like chicken eggs, just smaller. So while having them soft-boiled may be less fantastic, having them hard-boiled and in salads are an immense pleasure. Just cook them just as how you will for a chicken egg!⠀

What are pasteurised eggs? Why pasteurise?⠀

Pasteurisation of eggs involves applying heat to the eggs to kill any bacteria and virus inside and outside the eggs. In particular, it is the Salmonella Enteritidis bacteria (which causes Salmonella) and the Bird Flu Virus. Eggs are laid in an environment exposed to hen's excretion, thus bacteria is present and may be present on egg shells. The bacteria can also enter the egg via pores present on the egg shell. In addition, bacteria can be found in an egg if the hen is already infected with the bacteria. By pasteurising the eggs, we are reducing the risk of contracting bacterial or viral diseases when consuming the eggs.⠀

Pasteurised eggs are ideal for lightly-cooked eggs with runny yolks. Even though the egg is not fully cooked, you can eat your egg with a peace of mind knowing that the egg has been treated to kill off any viruses and bacteria in the egg!⠀

Our colleague at The Local Farm has also tried cooking up a meal using one Local Pasteurised Egg and another egg from another source. You can see the difference in the colour of the yolks! The yolk from the Local Pasteurised Egg is darker and richer in colour, and is certainly looks appetising! ⠀

What's in the TLF Survivor Pack? As the name suggests, it's a SURVIVOR pack, so we are going back to basics and providing you with produce that will help you achieve your basic nutritional needs. Here's what you will receive weekly.⠀

2 kinds of eggs. A pack of 15 local quail eggs by Lian Wah Hang Farm and a pack of 10 local pasteurised eggs by N&N Agriculture (@egg_story_sg).⠀
2 packs of local vegetables by Yili Vegetation (@yilifarm). The vegetables will be rotated between Xiao Bai Cai, Cai Xin Hua, Kang Kong, Round Spinach and Sharp Spinach.⠀
2 fish fillets from The Fish Farmer (@thefishfarmersg). The fillets will also be rotated between Seabass and Red Snapper. ⠀

To spice things up, you will also get 2 packs of Assam Style Mullet Chowder monthly. The chowder is a TLF collaboration between The Fish Farmer and The Soup Spoon.⠀

Food waste can also be due to loss, such as spoilage or spillage during processes before it reaches the consumer. ⠀

We all know that we, as consumers, have the greatest power to reduce food waste by only ordering and buying what we need and can finish. However, we, as consumers, can also play a part to reduce food loss. By eliminating the number of processes and reducing the time taken to bring food from the source to the table, we can reduce the amount of food lost. ⠀

What better way to do this than to support local! By going local, we reduce the number of processes and transport methods to bring the food from the farms to you! Although it may sound like this method uses much more water, it actually uses water up to 90% more efficiently, and that means less water is used compared to conventional farming! In Singapore, egg farms have to be certified under the Singapore Quality Egg Scheme (SQES), a quality assurance scheme that ensures our local egg farms produce fresh, quality eggs. These farms will undergo monthly inspections to ensure that the farm facilities are hygienic and that quality control measures are well maintained. These schemes, in addition to other quality assurance schemes for local farms, help ensure that food produced in Singapore are of high standards, and that they are safe for consumption. By buying local eggs, not only will you be assured of the safety and quality of the produce, they will also be the freshest as they take the shortest time to be delivered to the retail shops. At the same time, you are supporting our local farmers to continue to produce food locally, and this too can contribute to our local food security!
